Meeting with Dr. Akihiro Yamada, Professor Emeritus of Shinshu University

May 22, 2024
I had the privilege of reuniting with Dr. Akihiro Yamada, Professor Emeritus of Shinshu University and my former professor of English studies, who was incredibly influential during my time at the university.

After leaving Shinshu University, Dr. Yamada continued his academic career at Meisei University. Now, at the remarkable age of 95, he resides in Tsu, Mie Prefecture, where he remains deeply dedicated to his research on Shakespeare. With great enthusiasm, he is still actively writing academic theses—a true inspiration.

He Picked Me Up at Hisai Station and Welcomed Me to His Home🚗

On the day of my visit, Dr. Yamada drove himself to Hisai Station to pick me up. After having lunch with his wife, the three of us went to his home.

After graduation, although we exchanged New Year’s cards, I always hesitated to meet him in person. I worried it might feel intrusive or that I would be self-conscious, having distanced myself from English entirely. (In hindsight, these fears were completely unfounded.)

After a long postponement due to the pandemic, I was finally able to visit the site. With a sense of excitement, I arrived at Hisai Station by train.

Dr. Yamada greeted me with a gentle smile as he stepped out of the driver’s seat and introduced his wife. During the car ride, over lunch, and in the comfort of his home, we talked about many things, effortlessly bridging the gap of more than 40 years. To my surprise, he even remembered my involvement with the Shakespeare Society.

Later, I was invited to the professor’s study, housed in an annex. Floor-to-ceiling bookshelves were packed with specialized books on a variety of topics. His wife, a dedicated scholar herself, has an impressive collection of books, including complete works of Japanese literature alongside English texts.

An Unforgettable Time That Made Me Lose Track of Time⌛

It was such an enjoyable and meaningful experience that I completely lost track of time.

Two Shots After 43 Years? 💛
A moment worth the wait—capturing a reunion that’s been 43 years in the making!

In hindsight, I regret not taking more pictures to capture the moment. I hope this blog conveys just how well Dr. Yamada is doing.

During this visit, the scenery was adorned with the fresh greenery of spring. However, Dr. Yamada’s wife kindly invited us to come again during autumn, when the Kintetsu Osaka Line between Nara and Mie Prefectures is known for its breathtaking fall foliage.

Round Trip From Kyobate Station on the JR Sakurai Line🚉

I’m feeling a little bummed “today” (or “kyo” in Japanese), but this is where I’ll “bate” (as in the Chinese character for “end”) my blog!<(_ _)>

👆Kyobate Station on the JR Sakurai Line was both my departure and return point for this memorable journey. The station even features a charming round post 〠, adding a nostalgic touch to the scene.

It was a beautiful early summer day!
