The person I’ve missed so much is Toshihiko Okamura from Shinshu University, specializing in Humanities and Japanese History, who enrolled in 1975!

The reunion occurred in Kyoto during autumn at Daioin, the pagoda of Myoshinji Temple, the principal temple of the Rinzai sect of Buddhism. Unfortunately, Kyoto in the autumn, renowned for its fiery foliage in the ancient capital of a thousand years, has succumbed to overtourism. Those yearning for the serene Kyoto of yesteryears tend to avoid it if possible. During that autumn in Kyoto, Mr. Okamura quietly sought to recreate the olden autumnal atmosphere of the ancient capital.

About Daiouin

I won’t delve into unnecessary details, as Mr. Okamura might scold me, but the Daioin Temple, with a history spanning about 400 years, remains an active temple for parishioners. Upon entering, I found that a Buddhist memorial service had just concluded. Hence, it’s typically closed to the public, with limited access during spring and fall. Last year, a few alumni from Shinshu University visited. (For more information, please check the official website below!)

Okamura-san is actively involved in planning special worship services. Although this fall’s events have concluded, if you’ve been following this blog and wish to meet Mr. Okamura again, feel free to visit with your spouse, family, or friends! One of the highlights here is the fusuma-e (sliding door) painting project. While I was observing, someone mentioned that they come annually to admire these fusuma paintings. I discovered that there are numerous returning visitors, a detail also mentioned on the official website.

From the front entrance, you can catch sight of both the front gate and the fusuma paintings, making it a recommended viewing spot.

Afterword

For those familiar with Kyoto in autumn, it might be late to mention, but the usual hustle and bustle of this season is completely absent here.At Myoshin-ji Temple, nestled alongside Daioin Temple to the north, the pagodas are adorned with breathtaking autumn foliage, seemingly competing in their magnificence. The serene ambiance of old Kyoto can be savored by the few passersby. If you haven’t yet visited, I highly recommend experiencing this tranquil scene, along with Okamura-san’s reunion and the special exhibition.
